The history of
discovery
is filled with people whose routines were interrupted and who were then forced to come up with alternative solutions.

For example, from the Middle Ages on, pepper was the most important spice traded between Europe and the Far East.

That is because no other spice made heavily salted meat edible, and in Europe few forms of preservation other than salting were employed. Thus, it was salt and pepper that stood between meat-eating Europeans and starvation.

After Constantinople fell in 1453, the Turks disrupted the overland trade routes east from the Mediterranean causing pepper prices to skyrocket.

As a result of this economic jolt, European explorers sailed west and south in search of alternative passages to the Orient.

One might say the Americas were discovered as a “by-product” in the search for pepper!
