Look at this card’s drawing (the Image).
If you emphasize its dark area, it looks like a bird. But if you focus on the undrawn space inside, you’ll see a question mark (and — upside down — a seal balancing a ball on its nose).
The 13th-century Sufi poet and mystic Rumi had this insight into the creative process: “Every craftsman searches for what is not there to practice his craft.”
Example: piano virtuoso Artur Schnabel explained the secret of his musical artistry: “I handle the notes no better than many pianists. But the pauses between the notes — ah, that is were the art resides.”
